The 45-hectare course is located near the fishing village of Avlékété (Ouidah commune), 25 km west of Cotonou, Benin’s economic capital. Situated in a wetland area between land and sea, it has undergone environmental studies to limit its impact. Designed by architect Jeremy Pern, responsible for some 30 golf courses worldwide, this major project represents a major step forward in the development of the golf industry in the region. It will offer golf enthusiasts an exceptional playing experience.

Ouidah Golf Course, a tourist and sporting gem in Benin

Benin’s first golf course and the spearhead of the country’s tourism development

The project, located on the edge of a lagoon, presents a number of major environmental, social and economic challenges.

For the construction of the 90-hectare course near the fishing village of Avlékété, an impact assessment was carried out by a specialist consultancy to ensure the successful restructuring of the landscape, the management of rising water levels, and the channelling of water, with a view to protecting ecosystems. The project includes the construction of the course, the clubhouse, maintenance and roadworks.

The works are expected to last 24 months and employ 250 locally recruited staff. They include the construction of a golf course meeting international standards, a clubhouse and a jetty providing access to the site by boat via the lagoon, all covering an area of 100 hectares. The total site area is 100 ha, the golf course covers 90 ha, and the developed area amounts to 45 ha.

Less than a kilometer from Club Med, also planned for the area, it is part of the government’s plan to develop tourism in the country, by boosting business stays in Cotonou, cultural visits in Ouidah and seaside activities in Avlékété.

From design to construction: the journey of the turnkey Ouidah Golf Course

Golf course construction work: site preparation, earthworks, shaping (coarse and fine), drainage (fairways and roughs), irrigation, lake construction, construction of greens, tees, bunkers, pre-seeding preparation, sodding (creation and management of a nursery), landscaping, grass growth monitoring, path construction, wooden bridge construction, riprap.
CLUB HOUSE: all trades (structural work, waterproofing, insulation, plumbing, joinery, electrical work, golf buggy shelters, etc.), including: - Ground investigation - Site formation - Road and utilities networks - Wastewater treatment plant using a lagooning system - Construction of access roads and car parks - Traffic and safety signage - Outdoor lighting around the building - Landscaping - Mooring jetty for Club Med boats - Electrical connection to the fishermen’s road

Utility works and road and utilities infrastructure: (stormwater, wastewater, drinking water, electricity), roads and car parks, construction of players’ shelters, construction of driving range shelters, construction of a culvert beneath the Route des Pêches
EQUIPMENT: course maintenance equipment, golf buggies, lighting for the practice area, equipment for managing the driving range and course equipment (ball-collecting tractor, 10,000 practice balls, ball washer and dispenser, signage, targets, flags, signboards, tee balls, bogeys, etc.)
