The Ouidah Marina in Benin is an emblematic project in the region’s drive to develop tourism and the economy. This site, historically important for its role in the slave trade, is now at the heart of the Beninese government’s cultural and environmental rehabilitation efforts. The Marina is located in a coastal zone vulnerable to coastal erosion. Landscaping work incorporating sustainable solutions (local plants, dune protection) is essential to protect this area.

context

The ouidah marina, A window on the ocean and memory

Located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Porte du Non-Retour, the Marina de Ouidah is an emblematic space combining nature, culture, history and modernity. This fast-developing site is an integral part of a vast project to rehabilitate the historical and tourist heritage of Ouidah, a city steeped in history and at the heart of African memory.

The Marina stands at the end of the Slave Route, the 4-kilometer route taken by thousands of enslaved Africans from the city to the coast. It is thus a symbolic and strategic place, where past and future meet.

Conceived as a tourist attraction and heritage enhancement center, the Ouidah Marina includes or is planning several developments:

  • Seaside facilities (equipped beaches, restaurants, accommodation)
  • Cultural and memorial facilities linked to the history of the slave trade
  • Spaces for relaxation and leisure open onto the ocean
  • An ideal setting for cultural, artistic and ceremonial events
