Its capacity is estimated at 60 000 seats, making it one of the largest stadiums in the country. In 2015, the stadium was approved by CAF (Confederation of African Football) and FIFA, which allowed it to host its first international matches the same year. It notably hosted a CAF Cup match in March 2015, then a qualifying match for the 2017 CAN, Ethiopia vs Lesotho on June 14, 2015, with more than 70,000 spectators according to estimates.
In October 2021, CAF suspended the stadium from hosting international competitions due to deficiencies in medical facilities, media and VIP centers, as well as training infrastructure. In response, a major renovation and reconstruction project was launched by the Amhara regional government, in partnership with the federal government and the MIDROC group.
