Mangrove
Benin
Mangroves are strategic ecosystems for coastal areas. They play a major role in protecting against coastal erosion, preserving biodiversity and supporting local economic activities, particularly small-scale fishing.
THE PROJECT :
Nursery
THE WORK :
Construction of a mangrove nursery in the Ouidah Golf Course Mangrove Forest, Benin
DETAILS:
CLIENT : ANPT : National Agency for Heritage Promotion and Tourism Development
Project
context
GREGORI INTERNATIONAL, original nurseryman, expert in plant engineering
In many coastal areas, these ecosystems are now degraded by urbanisation, hydraulic developments, excessive logging and the effects of climate change. Restoring mangroves by planting mangrove trees addresses environmental, climatic and socio-economic issues simultaneously:
►Ecological benefits: coastal protection, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, water quality
►Socio-economic benefits: support for small-scale fishing, regional resilience, local jobs
Work
carried out
Plant construction, installation and transplanting
- Accurate site diagnosis, including analysis of hydrology, salinity and causes of degradation
- Species are selected with a preference for local seeds in order to ensure ecological resilience.
- Planting is carried out manually at low tide, using propagules or seedlings from nurseries or from the natural environment, depending on the stability of the site, with appropriate spacing and during the rainy season.
