The Iba Mar Diop Stadium is an iconic sports facility located in the Medina district of Dakar, Senegal. Opened in 1978, this multi-purpose stadium traditionally hosts soccer matches, particularly those involving local clubs such as ASC Jaraaf and US Gorée, as well as athletics, rugby, handball, and other sporting events. Before its renovation, it had a capacity of approximately 5,000 seats with a natural grass pitch for soccer matches and other multipurpose facilities.

Modernization and construction work for Dakar 2026 at the IMD Iba Mar Diop Stadium
As part of preparations for the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games, the stadium has been chosen as one of the main venues for several sporting events. In this context, a complete renovation of the complex is underway to modernize its facilities and adapt the infrastructure to the international standards expected for an event of this scale.
For the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games, the Iba Mar Diop Stadium is undergoing a major renovation project:
Increased capacity: the stands will be transformed, increasing from approximately 5,000 to 8,000 seats to accommodate a larger audience in better conditions.
Modern facilities: construction of a presidential box, elevators for people with reduced mobility, high-level lighting, high-performance sound system, and giant screens.
More sports facilities: in addition to the main field, the site will include several training fields, a 3,000-seat indoor mini-arena for handball, futsal, and other team sports, facilities for rugby sevens, boxing, and athletics, as well as a sports medicine center and a modernized gymnasium.
Social and urban heritage: developments around the stadium include urban redevelopment, road modernization, and consideration for local businesses, notably with the creation of a Maison du Cuir dedicated to artisans in the neighborhood.
The 4th Youth Olympic Games, known as Dakar 2026, will take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026, in Senegal. This is the first edition of an Olympic event on the African continent, bringing together young athletes from around the world for sporting competitions, cultural activities, and an educational exchange program.
This international event will cover several cities, including Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly, and will feature more than 100 events in around 20 different sports, with a strong ambition to leave a lasting legacy for sport and infrastructure in Senegal.
