Project
context
kensington, the emblem of barbados
Throughout its history, Kensington Oval has hosted famous international finals: the 2007 World Cup Final (Australia vs Sri Lanka), the 2010 World T20 Final, and is set to be one of the key venues for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Wickets are generally batsmen-friendly, with free bounces, but also offer a balanced playing field for spinners as the game progresses.
The site is deeply rooted in Barbadian culture: vibrant spectators, a festive atmosphere, local mascots, a themed restaurant (“Village Experience”)… creating much more than a sporting spectacle.
In addition to cricket, the stadium is used for concerts, festivals, cultural and commemorative events – such as the Rihanna concert, reggae, gospel and soca shows, and the state funeral of Prime Minister David Thompson.
