Inaugurated in 1962, shortly after Jamaica’s independence, the stadium was designed to host large-scale sporting events. It can accommodate around 35,000 spectators and is mainly used for soccer, athletics and concerts.

context
kingston stadium, a legendary institution
Located in Kingston, Jamaica’s vibrant capital, the National Stadium is much more than just a sports venue: it’s a symbol of national identity, a place steeped in history, passion and legendary performances.
The National Stadium is most famous for having been the scene of the exploits of some of Jamaica’s greatest athletes, including Usain Bolt, who raced there on several occasions. Every year, it hosts major competitions such as the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Championships and the prestigious Boys and Girls Championships, a veritable breeding ground for talent in world athletics.
With just 50 days to excavate the existing playing surface, install the drainage and irrigation systems and resod the pitch, this was one of the biggest challenges the company ever faced.
In Jamaica’s difficult construction environment, where supplies are not always available on time, and logistics and shipping times can work against you, the task seemed impossible. However, Gregori International managed to complete all the work on time and on budget, to the great satisfaction of the customer.
The pitch was sodded on January 20, 2003, and was ready for matches on February 15.
