The General Mathieu Kérékou Stadium (GMK) is Benin’s largest sports complex, located in Cotonou, the country’s economic capital. Named in honor of former Beninese President Mathieu Kérékou, it is an important symbol of sport and culture in Benin. It has a capacity of approximately 35,000 spectators, with modern stands and VIP areas.

Natural and artificial turf sports fields
THE WORK :
Gregori International led the reconstruction of the main natural turf pitch, as well as the creation of a synthetic turf training field, with the installation of maintenance and safety infrastructures.

context
the gmk stadium, a national pride
This project is part of a wider drive to upgrade Benin’s sports infrastructure, driven by a strong political will to promote sport as a lever for national development.
The Stade Général Mathieu Kérékou plays a central role in this strategy: it’s the main venue for national team matches and high-level competitions, but also a place for popular gatherings and collective pride.
The modernization of these pitches meets a twofold objective: to improve playing conditions for professional and amateur players, while enhancing Benin’s attractiveness on the African sporting scene.
By enhancing the technical and aesthetic quality of its facilities, the country is asserting its ambition to host major continental competitions and nurture a new generation of local talent.
