Built in the early 1980s and inaugurated in 1983, this stadium was part of a period of expansion in Mauritania’s sports infrastructure, marking an important milestone in the development of the country’s sports sector. It has since undergone several renovations, notably in the early 2000s, to meet modern requirements and international standards.
Designed as a multipurpose venue, the stadium primarily hosts soccer matches but also features a track and field facility, making it suitable for a variety of sports. It is used by the Mauritanian national team as well as several local clubs, and serves as the venue for the country’s biggest sporting events.
With a capacity that varies depending on the configuration and renovations (ranging from about 10,000 to 20,000 seats), the Olympic Stadium is the country’s largest sports facility and a true gathering place for sports fans. On game days, it becomes a hub of excitement where public enthusiasm and competitive spirit come together.
Beyond sports, the stadium also plays a major cultural role. It regularly hosts artistic events, concerts, and national celebrations, thereby contributing to the social and cultural life of Nouakchott. This versatility makes it a symbol of unity and vitality for Mauritanian youth.

Renovation of the synthetic turf to natural grass at the Nouakchott Olympic Stadium
- 8,150 square meters and a 450-square-meter shot put area
- Removal of the existing artificial turf
- Earthwork and fine grading, subgrade compaction
- Construction of a perimeter drainage system
- Installation of an automatic watering system
- Supply and installation of a growth medium made from locally sourced sand that has been enriched
- Construction of shallow drainage ditches
- Planting a lawn with climate-appropriate grass
- Monitoring of grass growth over a 3-month period following seeding, with no sports activity
- Supply and installation of a pair of fixed 11-a-side soccer goals and a set of corner posts
