hippodrome
la zarzuela

Spain

Spread over more than 100 hectares – larger than Retiro Park – the site is a veritable green lung just a few minutes from the center of Madrid.

The training center has several tracks: a main grass track (1,725 m perimeter) and three working tracks (one of which is sand and fiber), all equipped with a modern drainage system and safety barriers adapted to international standards. It also has facilities for around 800 horses, divided between two stabling villas (North and South).

Project
context

the hippodrome de la zarzuela, an equestrian institution

Madrid’s Zarzuela racecourse has been the driving force behind horse racing in Spain since it opened in 1941. Until 1996, the races never ceased to be celebrated at this mythical venue. That same year, however, the racecourse was forced to close for economic reasons. It wasn’t until 2003, thanks to investment by the State through its holding company SEPI and a number of shareholders, that the racecourse was refurbished and once again able to host horse races.

The infrastructure has been renovated, including all the tracks. The fiber-reinforced sand training track, built by Gregori International, was described as “the best in Europe” as soon as the racecourse reopened.
