The project involves rehabilitating the Akouédo landfill site, which covers an area of 100 hectares, in order to secure the site and, in a second phase, develop it into an urban park. The innovative aspect of the project is that it proposes a complete transformation of the site to encourage the development of economic, recreational and social activities, whilst enhancing the value of the surrounding land in this neighbourhood of Abidjan.

context
the former akouédo landfill transformed into an urban park
Located in the heart of Abidjan, in operation for nearly 50 years and covering an area of over 100 hectares, the Akouédo landfill site had received nearly 18,000 tonnes of waste. Having reached capacity and posing multiple health risks, the landfill site was permanently closed in 2018. With the aim of returning this space to the people of Abidjan, the landfill site is being transformed into an urban park, a true green lung for the city. To this end, initial earthworks and site development have been carried out to install a water treatment system and a system for recovering fermentation gases. The biogas will be converted into energy. The park features a sports and leisure centre, several footpaths, and a cultural hub centred around the Environment Centre.
The main aim of rehabilitating the Akouédo site is to reduce the transfer of pollution from the landfill to the environment by containing the entire waste mass.
The containment technique involves reshaping the surface of the waste to create domes and slopes, installing a watertight cover to divert rainwater into peripheral ditches, and a whole circuit of pipes to collect the leachate and biogas produced by waste fermentation.
